"I
was born and raised here in Colorado. Actually a third generation
native so my roots go way back with the history of the state.
My family has always been very connected with the outdoors. Consequently
I am the most comfortable when I am enveloped by the natural world.
So that is what I paint. For many years I painted Colorado wildlife
and landscapes. Recently however my creative focus changed from
realism to abstract expressionism.
It
was time for a change. But not so much of a change as it first
appears. Where before I was painting images of nature in an attempt
to capture it's concept and spirit. Now I just paint the concept
and spirit and leave the images out of it. It's still nature.
Abstract expressionism is turning your paintings inward rather
than outward. Painting the nature that is inside of the artist.
Normally
we think of nature as being a nirvana. A place of quiet contemplation
and rest. To a degree I believe that to be true. But that isn't
the whole picture. There is a great turmoil and decay in nature.
A reformation of energy and the consumption of things which have
come to rest. This
is true both outside of me and inside of me.
We
will never understand this world until we understand that it was
created as a work of art. "In the beginning God created."
That's what should be on our money."
